"Helping Families Prepare for Emergencies"

In conjunction with its bioterrorism drill on Wednesday, March 29 at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) would like to remind the public about the importance of preparing families for emergencies. Similar to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) drill it carried out in June of 2005, the purpose of the drill is to test the medication dispensing operation of MCDH's emergency response plan.

Volunteers who go through the drill numerous times can receive emergency supplies of their own, from a whistle to a duffel bag, to help them start their own emergency plans. Keri Zaleski, Emergency Response Coordinator for MCDH, states, "We want to thank our volunteers in a meaningful way for helping us. Practicing our disaster plan is how we improve our readiness for whatever public health emergency we might face". Zaleski says creating a family plan and preparing an emergency kit will come in handy for any sudden disruption, like a power outrage. Knowing what to expect and what they will need in an emergency - supplies, contact numbers, evacuation route - allows families to be better prepared.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to ensure plans and protocols are in place for MCDH to provide mass vaccinations during a public health emergency. Volunteers will be asked to play the role of victim (following a written script) as they go through the clinic process to receive simulated medication. This exercise is funded through a grant by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
